Maldon 5k Series Millward victorious at Maldon Park The Maldon Summer Promenade Evening Handicap 5km series got under way with a good crowd of 124 runners, 31 were Colchester Harriers. Young Danny Millward led the Colchester Harriers charge with superb personal best time of 17:11 to beat team mate Mark Harrod 17:12 ( Pb) by one second in a sprint finish and take the fastest time on the night. Harrier’s Haul of Honours at Essex Champs With Rio just around the corner, 14 & 15 May was a major date on the British Amateur Athletic calendar as athletes aged from 12 years old competed in their areas across the country to claim the title of County Champion. Howgill Mountain Marathon Smalls wins again Only a week after sweeping to victory in the Halstead Essex Marathon, Allen Smalls won the Howgill Mountain Marathon, in the Yorkshire borders of the Lake District, in style. Smalls took the lead at 21 miles and finally came home with 7 minutes to spare on his nearest rival. This was an extremely tough event with large climbs, which as normal Smalls took in his stride. Smalls defies all the odds Colchester Harrier's Allen Smalls has won many marathons in his time, has captained Great Britain in 100km racing, and last year was one of the pace makers who brought Paula Ratcliffe home in 2:36 at the London Marathon, but Smalls thought his chances of winning the County Championship again were over at 47 years old. With a good field of class runners on the line it looked, at the best, top 10 for Smalls. Millward is flying The first summer Harwich handicap 5km had perfect conditions and some great times were ran by Colchester Harriers. 14 year old Danny Millward ran an astonishing 17:43, while Wayne Cook went through the line in a personal best time of 18:57. Paul Preston was also on top form in 17:57. Others to run were Dan Foster 18:52, Richard Boden 19:03, Simon Smith 19:06, Richard Millward 19:27, Ady Frost 19:49, John Wheatley 23:21 and Steve Clarke 22:50. Mussett again champion Colchester Harrier's Adrian Mussett retained his Colchester Garrison 10km title in style clocking 32:31in severe heat, beating up and coming youngster Ramadan Osman of Colchester and Tendring into second place in 33:51. Mark Harrod was 6th in 36:20 in the field of 600 runners. Chris Manby is really back to form 17th 38:54, and Simon Smith was 18th in 39:03. The Essex 5 miles was held for the first time at Witham on Mayday and a very good event was staged by Witham Roadrunners. Colchester Harriers took silver medals in the men's team race and bronzes in the ladies, with the men also winning the team of 4 in the open race. Chris Sellens, only a week after running 2:32 at the London Marathon, was 6th in 27:40, Colin Ridley was 10th in 28:00 and also won the gold over 50 medal, and the final Essex team medallist was Mark Harrod 12th in a personal best 28:24,Harrod also took the individual Bronze medal over 40. At the Heritage multi terrain half marathon, at Thorpeness, Ellie Mayne swept to victory in warm conditions. It was top ten finishes in the men for Martyn Clarke 8th, and Chris Manby 10th, Simon Smith just missed out finishing 11th, Cathy beard and Les Dunham also finished. In the Marathon the going was tough but Malcolm Statham and David Wright kept to the job and finished 5th and 6th in 3:41 and 3:42. Two under 15 girls, Lauren Strutt and Rachel Hoddell, braved the cold and windy conditions at Thurrock to compete in the Essex Pentathlon championships In far from ideal conditions both girls struggled in the long jump as the cold wind blew directly into their faces for the first event. Both were disappointed with their jumps, which were well off their best, but remained in good spirits ready for the challenges that lie ahead.
