This years English Schools Athletics national championships were held in Gateshead's International stadium at the weekend. Three young Colchester Harriers athletes were in action, one representing Suffolk and two helping the Essex team to overall victory. Essex were crowned champions of the event and were helped by some exceptional performances, one being a Bronze medal winning performance from Philippa Davenhall in the senior girls Hammer. Bronzes for both teams Colchester Harriers are always to the fore in the road running Championships and yet again came away with a double haul of medals with both mens and ladies teams taking bronzes and unlucky not to take silvers in a very tight contest. Second claim Harrier Angus Holford was bronze medallist in 33:54 was supported by Chris Sellens who just missed out in 4th place 34:01, but took the team bronze medals along with Colin Ridley 11th 35:34 and Mark Harrod 14th 35:46. 17 in top 20 at Maldon Promenade Colchester Harriers supplied 17 of the first 20 fastest runners home at the latest Maldon Promenade 5km Handicap race, held on a reasonably windy evening in the Park. Danny Millward 17:01 and Mark Harrod 17:03 had their customary battle before as normal Millward came out on top, they finished 2nd and 3rd, also in the top 10 were Jon nears 17:26, Doug Mcgillian 18:02, Max Caulfield 18:13, Alex Sales (Pb) 18:15 and a returning from injury Ged McMillan 18:21. Smalls has a Welsh Adventure Colchester Harriers had a team of runners in Mid Wales for one of the toughest races on the calendar, the Welsh Trail Marathon help in Coed Brennan Forest including technical Mountain Bike trails and extreme climbs. Yet again Harriers Allen Smalls showed the way. The 48 year old cruised through the Field of experienced fell runners on the second half of the Marathon to finish runner up in 3:22:06 with only race winner Alastair Murray of Horwich ahead of him in 3:11:40. There were a number of Harriers competing on Saturday with many success stories, personal bests achieved, medals won and championship records broken. In the senior women Stacey Eyers won gold in the 800m with a time of 2:20.3. In the under 20 age group Connor Oliver won 100m gold with a PB of 11:04. Philippa Davenall added to her medal collection with gold in the Hammer with a winning throw of 53.28, breaking the championship record by 3.67m. Harriers latest fixture saw them compete in Battersea Park with a somewhat depleted team, and several athletes covering many events, but sadly there were not enough, and despite some excellent personal results, and with much frustration for team managers: Helen Holdsworth and Linda Garnham, too many events were left unsupported. Colchester Harriers seventeen year old hammer thrower, Philippa Davenall, was in outstanding form at the weekend competing at the national under 20 championships in Bedford. Taking part in a competition where she was ranked 6th she far exceeded expectations to finish 2nd and therefore receiving a hard earned silver medal. In addition to her placing she also set a new under 20 and senior club record with a personal best of 54.86 metres. Yeovil Marathon Rodgers gets his qualifying time Colchester Harriers Paul Rodgers achieved his qualifying time for the 2017 London Marathon with a good finishing time of 3:07 at the Yeovil marathon. Rodgers was one of the many casualties in the blazing heat of the Halstead marathon so is pleased to have put the record straight at the Yeovil event. The young Harriers were out in force in the County Schools Championships at Chelmsford with fifteen athletes representing the North East Essex District, many achieving personal best times and distances The most successful event was the intermediate men’s 800M where Jake Young took gold ,1:59.6, and Oscar Dawson silver, 2:01.8, confirming their dominance in the event within the county. Scorching heat raises the standards Summer arrived at last for the third round of the EYAL meet held at Garon Park in Southend on Sunday 5 June. Over 50 Colchester Harriers youngsters held their heads high to take third place against fierce competition, inching ahead of the host Club. The scorching temperatures brought with it a bundle of Personal Best performances including a pair of National Standards for two of Harrier’s top sprinters and a top ten national relay time.
