The distance runners of Colchester Harriers had some great results as the road season starts to ebb away and the winter chill of Cross countries begins. Allen Smalls and Sean Ketterridge got the green vests off to a flyer with a joint win at the Saltmarsh 75 mile race clocking 11 hours and one minute as they finished well clear of the field. Dowell Wins Gold At World Tri Age Group Champs

Melissa Dowell travelled to Oklahoma to race in the ITU World Long Distance triathlon Age Group Championships. She was part of a 30-strong representation of athletes from Great Britain. The GB age group team returned with 5 medals, 2 Golds, 1 silver and 2 Bronzes, with Melissa taking Gold in the female 50:54 age category . The race comprised of 4km swim /120km bike / 30 km run with the hot, humid and windy conditions set to make it a gruelling race . Essex XC Relays – Hockley

3 sets of medals in big Colchester Harriers turn out The Winter Cross Country season kicked off at a very hilly Hockley course for the Essex Cross Country relay championships which gave more than 50 Harriers a tough test, especially as the weather was bordering on hot. Although Harriers were weakened in the senior men’s race due to injuries, the ladies and mixed teams as well as the under 15 boys all came up with team medals. Cameron produces a classic ultra Colchester Harriers Cameron Humphries has come a long way in a short time and produced a superb run at the Tooting Bec classic track 24 hour run. Humphries who warmed up for the event by running hundreds of miles between the European Championship football stadiums in France saw all his hard work come good with a superb 3rd place at Tooting Bec. Humphries went past the 100 mile mark in 17 hours and 23 minutes, continued to 112 miles at 20 hours and went on to cover just over 137 miles in the 24 hours! Great runs by Harriers Angus Holford and Chris Sellens were late callups for the Essex team in the Eastern inter-counties match at Peterborough, but both enjoyed superb runs. Holford ran a personal best 5000m on the track in 15:28 to finish runner up in a tight race which was just lost in the last lap, although Holford ran it in 65 seconds. Sellens was also runner up in the B string 5000m in a good time of 16:26. Stacey Eyres won the 800m and is getting back to her best. National Platform for young Harriers Track Athletes Five young athletes represented Colchester Harriers at the prestigious National Championships held at Bedford International Stadium on the weekend of 27th & 28 August. To qualify, each athlete must attain the required England Athletics entry standard time or distance during the competition year. Saturday 27th saw first year U17 men’s sprinter Mufaro Shava compete in the opening heat of the 100m. Mussett on top form Colchester Harriers Adrian Mussett had a sensational run at the New York Paris 8km held in Central Park, 5000 runners went to the line and Mussett came home 6th in 26:18 beaten only by 4 Kenyans and an American and was 1st Veteran. Anita Mussett finished well up the field in the ladies race. Arthur Whiston celebrated his retirement with an over 65 win at the Clacton Half Marathon, Sophie Stephenson was 5th lady they both clocked 1:41:52 in very windy conditions. SAL – Tonbridge

Colchester Harriers travelled to Tonbridge on Saturday for the final Southern Athletic League match of the season knowing that a win against the teams from Basingstoke and Mid Hants, Thames Valley Harriers and Tonbridge AC would keep them in the top division next season.  The athletes fought hard for every point and had to wait until the result of the final field event, the men’s discus, to secure the win by just 2.5 points.
