8 years ago Steve Way weighed 16 stone, smoked, drank and enjoyed takeaway food; a lot! I read recently how Steve loves parkrun and his running club. In addition to many remarkable achievements, I learned that recently, at the age of 41, he had also run 100k in a new British record. Harriers great medal day kicks of Winter! The beautiful warm sunny day at Hockley amazingly kicked off the Winter Cross Country season and thoughts were far away from freezing January competition where the hardy come to the fore. Colchester Harriers were  on the day the best all round team with a glut of medals. Juniors The under 17 men earned a super silver set of medals, thanks to Charlie Everest, Oscar Dawson, and Jake Young, and were indeed only 20 seconds off the gold behind a strong Basildon team. Ipswich Half Marathon At the Ipswich Half marathon Mark Harrod was 11th in 1-21-51, the race was tough with only 6 runners beating the magic 1-20 mark. Dominic King striding for Rio in the Olympic Racewalk, clocked 1-35-00 not bad for walking! and was 66th out of 1209. A number of the club's young athletes have been competing in local 'fun' runs over the last few weeks, with great results Langham 2k (6th September) Danny Millward came 2nd overall and second boy (only beaten by a boy a year older) in a fine time of 7:27. Hannah Rodgers was first girl home and 7th overall beating a number of much older girls (and boys), in a time of 9:10. Gold for ladies Colchester Ladies swept to team gold at the Essex half Marathon Championships led by up and coming star Briony Downes 4th, Ellie Mayne 7th  and Annette Oakman 13th. Team win for Harriers Colchester Harriers swept to a superb team win at the Dedham 10km, first home was Richard Heath in 34-30 for 2nd spot with team mate Jordan Rowe 3rd in 34-30,Ged McMillan was 9th in 39-07 and Keith Marley was the final team winner in 40-03 , Andrea James was 3rd lady overall and other good runs came from Dan Wilkinson 46-06 and Barry Shaw 45-07. Walker-McClimens gains first win Colchester Harriers supplied the marshals and pacers for the latest Castle 5km so did not take part except for the Pacers and Pete West who set up the course and then ran a brilliant race to finish runner up! Colchester Harriers had a fine turn out of 43 marshalls and pacers, thanks goes to all who helped out to make it such a success. The week previous, good results were gained. A small field lined up for this trail race. No one quite sure which foot wear to use; it wasn't muddy so over half of us got it wrong! Fairly flat through fields, sandy paths, grass and gravel too, the signage was great until mile 11 when many at the front got it wrong and added 1/4 mile to the tally that pushed the final count beyond half marathon. Double team win for Harriers Colchester Harriers leapt to double team success at the fast Langham 10km, recent signing Richard Heath showed what a good signing he is for the green vests with a victory in 34-16, Heath was also first Veteran, Allen Smalls was 4th in 35-42 and first veteran over 45, with Mark Harrod 36-40 (9th) and completing the winning team Paul Rodgers in 13th spot in 37-17.
