Harriers finish second on scorching day in Chelmsford With the heat really on, Colchester Harriers pushed Chelmsford AC all the way in the Southern Athletics League Division One meeting on Saturday, finishing second ahead of Marshall Milton Keynes and Crawley AC. The second placed finish moves the Harriers comfortably into mid-table in the overall league standings as they enter the second half of the season. Having run consistently well for many years, Stradling once again shot to victory in the tough Round Mersea Island Race. This half marathon course includes beach and trail running, suiting Angus Holford who was runner up for the men. The green vests swept up the team prize thanks to Paul Rodgers 7th, Keith Marley 9th, and Richard Flutter 10th. Good runs also came from Craig Mitchell, David Hilson, Lee Holihan, Malcolm Statham, Arthur Whiston, Jenny Richardson and Fay Smalls. U17 Sprinter, Daniel Jones is having a great 2018 season and with a boosted confidence  he decided to use his Welsh Parentage to take on the best of the best Welsh Athletes to compete at the Welsh Age Group Championships in Newport. On Saturday 23 June, having won his 100m heat in 11.52s (-2.2s) he claimed a great silver medal in the final - against stiff competition and a strong head wind (-1.4).  With the sun out and the wind more favourable Sunday turned into a scorcher. U15’s Eliza Betts and Zion Ateba both Competed for Suffolk Schools in the Anglian Schools Championships in Norwich on Saturday 16 June.   Against stiff competition from athletes from Norfolk, Lincolnshire and Cambridgeshire, Eliza won the Intermediate Girls Long Jump with a new PB of 5.14m.   Zion competing in Junior Girls enjoyed an exhilarating Hurdles race where she was placed 4th  in 12.8s – with less than half a second splitting the first four athletes.  In Her High Jump she was placed 5th with a clearance of... read more

The U20/U23 English National Championships were held at Bedford International Stadium on Saturday 16  and Sunday 17 June.  Athletes who had achieved the entry standard were eligible to compete from all four home countries.  During the weekend there were five Colchester Harriers competing in their chosen events. The only U23 athlete was 19 year old Phillppa Davenall who competed in the hammer. She acquitted herself well, finishing 5th, as a 1st year athlete, with a best throw of 55.72m.   At U20 level both Joy Ogunleye and Caitlin O’Reilly competed in the 100m on Day One.... read more

The South Downs off road marathon saw another fine effort by Allen Smalls who, only a fortnight after winning the Stour Valley Marathon came home in 5th position with a good time of 3hrs 7mins, claiming first V50. Sadly Chris Manby had to withdraw at 13 miles with an achillies injury. Rebecca Cooke ran the half marathon trail in 1hr 44mins. Fay Smalls also ran well in the same event. The 10km event saw Keiron Callaghan clock 48 minutes. The Capel St Mary 5 mile race had some Harriers representation. The cream of the County’s talented youngsters battled for glory at the 2018 Essex County Schools Championships which took place at Chelmsford Athletics Centre on Saturday 9 June.  Olivia Simon and Sam Shippey each added Schools County Champion to their list of credits having taken top podium placings in style.  This event gives selectors a final opportunity to seek team members ahead of the prestigious English Schools Championships which will take place in July. Attention to all members: It was discussed and agreed at a recent committee meeting, that the club are going to trial membership cards. This is due to some users not being members, yet continuing to use the facilities that the club pays for. Also to monitor payment of gate fees. Dear parents of Athletes, we have noticed that quite a few Juniors are being dropped by the Gate entrance to the Track. For their safety, and for flow of traffic, please can we politely request that you drop them in the carpark or use a side road.
