I recently returned from the European Middle Distance Aquabike Championships held in Ibiza at the end of October. The race was due to start at 1:30pm with an iconic beach start, swim out around an island and back to the beach, with a swim course of 1,900 metres . This was then followed by an undulating 2 lap bike route on closed roads totalling 90 .kilometres. Unfortunately race day arrived with severe thunderstorms and heavy rain. Essex Cross Country League at One Tree Hill, Langdon Hills, a very tough country park course saw some excellent results from junior, senior and veteran runners from Colchester Harriers. The under 17 men were runners up on the day led by the ever reliable Danny Millward 3rd.  Millward was joined in the successful team by Thomas Palmer 13th, Victor Steinward 14th and Ziggy Lambton 22nd. It was as tight a finish as you could get at the second round of the NESS XC League held at Great Notley Park.  The Harriers ladies swept to victory thanks to Andrea James 4th, Becky Cooke 5th, Debbie Cattermole 10th, and Annette Oakman 12th, beating Ipswich JAFFA ladies by 8 points.  The men saw the reverse, placing second by 17 points to Ipswich JAFFA, with our scoring men Danny Millward 3rd, Nat Filer 4th, Ermeaus Aferwerki 7th, Richard Heath 12th, Chris Sellens 15th, Jon Nears 35th, Alex Sales 36th, and Paul Preston 38th.  Overall the Harriers finished second with a 9 point deficit.  ... read more

The first Essex League Cross Country event of the season got underway at Hockley on Saturday Colchester Harriers athletes had to dig deep in cold conditions to record a number of respectable results, in the Men’s 8.8k  the in-form Ed Mitchel showed his mental toughness with a well placed 5th place, 17 yr old Ermeas Afewerki in his first Senior race found the course challenging to finish a fine 54th, good support came from Michael Smith 67th; Gavin Scanlon 69th with determined runs from Paul Spowage V50  84th, Peter West V50  92nd, Chris Manby 109th and Andrew Taczynski 140th.   The... read more

Harriers Hammer throwers Rob Earle, and recent signing Megan Larkins, had a successful weekend at the annual British Hammer Circle Reunion Open in Hull over 13th & 14th October.   This was an event which featured many top ranked athletes from the UK, including 2018 Commonwealth champion, and top three ranked on the world lists, Nick Miller.   For the Harriers, Megan set new figures for a PB and club record In the Weight Throw [16.53] and  finished an excellent second among a high-quality Hammer field with a best throw of 54.55m. Wix 5 Colchester Harriers Ed Mitchell is in cracking form, a week after winning the Essex 10 mile Championship, Mitchell ran a superb 5 mile Essex Championship at Wix to become County Champion and take the gold medal in in 26m 13s.  Danny Millward is only a youngster but ran very well in the elite field to clock 28m 19s for 15th place, Colin Ridley was also County Champion taking the over 50 medal in 28m 56s. The club entered Sunday's Suffolk junior cross country relays at Bourne Park, Ipswich for the first time with thirteen young Harriers competing in the event. The under 15 girls A team of Madeleine Claydon, Milly Presland and Jess Longstaff all ran superbly to win the gold medals in the 3 x 3k race in 37m 25s, almost seven minutes ahead of the second team from Beccles and Bungay Harriers. Madeleine ran a storming first leg clocking 12m 08s, handing over to Milly with a comfortable lead of 2m 44s.
