Sunday 29th April saw Rebecca Jeggo and Charlie Dobson make their debuts as second claim members for Shaftesbury Barnet, in the UK Youth Development League, Southern Region.  Shaftesbury compete in the Premier Division. This national league includes some of the best athletics clubs in the country including Harrow AC and Windsor, Slough, Eton and Hounslow. Colchester Harriers were invited to participate in the National 12 Stage Road Relays earlier this month. Travelling to Sutton Park, near Birmingham alongside team manager Richard Pickering were; Ed Mitchell, Adrian Mussett, Ramadam Osman, Clive Thomas, Nate Filer, Doug Mc Gillivray, Chris Sellens, Jon Nears, Colin Ridley, Keith Marley, Paul Rodgers, Alex Sales.  Top class opposition saw our chaps finish 41st beating Billericay, who were the only other Essex team to compete. Lydia, a level one Coach has taken over from Liz Cudmore and Arthur Whitson, providing structured sessions for mixed ability and entry level runners. Those wishing to participate need to be over 18 and able to maintain a steady continuous pace for approximately forty minutes. Harriers Juniors opened their track and field season with a trip to Watford on Sunday 15 April -and couldn’t have chosen a tougher draw than facing a large, strong home team as well as the might of Dacorum and Tring and if that wasn’t enough, Shaftesbury Barnett Harriers, one of the top ranked UK clubs. Young Olivia Simon has laid down a strong start to her throws season by claiming another club record.   Competing against U17 women, at the Thetford Winter Throws Open series at Bury St. Edmunds on Saturday 7 April,  first year U15 Simon claimed a good 3rd place with new personal best throw of 34.46m - adding almost three and a half meters to her previous best.  This placed her first in the U15 category.   She will compete again this weekend in Watford at the first EYAL meet of the season, where she will be kept busy mixing throws and... read more

Almost forty youngsters took on the challenge of a Quad Kids style competition on Saturday 24th March as an informal season opener. Despite a slight chill in the air and a couple of irritating showers,  the morning was a huge success for all concerned.  Ages of competitors ranged from 10 to 16 and included some of  those who have joined the club's Sunday Development squad over the last few months or who are still on the waiting list.  Each athlete was able to compete two heats of 60m, three rounds of Long Jump and Ball Throw as well as a 600m. Two Harriers donned their green vests to compete at the British Masters Indoor and Winter Throw Championships over the weekend of 10th & 11th March at Lee Valley.   Both Colin Ridley and Rob Earle competed in the Men’s 55 category; with Ridley coming away with two splendid podium placings with a silver in the 3000m in time of 9.47.73  and a bronze in 1500m in a time of 4.37.19.   Rob Earle had a very successful weekend bringing home two glorious gold medals from Shot (12.93m) and the Hammer (49.86m). A sensational weekend of athletic action took place at the EIS in Sheffield as hundreds of youngsters battled it out at the England Indoor Age Group Championships. Representing Harriers this year in their respective 200m races were Rebecca Jeggo and Charlie Dobson. Having gained the qualification standard at the Essex & Eastern Indoor Championships, British Athletics invited Rebecca Jeggo to compete at their Indoor Championships held at the Birmingham Arena on Sunday 18th February, which was broadcast on the BBC. In front of an enthusiastic crowd, Rebecca coped admirably and lined up in heat four against opponents who had all represented their respective countries.
