David died in Colchester Hospital on Sunday 2nd June 2019,  following a very short illness. For several years he had been resident at Mistley Manor Nursing Home. Mistley, Essex. Margaret and I have visited him along with other  members of our Club. David was a Trustee at Hamilton Lodge, Great Bromley, a home for adults with learning difficulties. For many years Colchester Joggers/Harriers supported the home and raised monies towards projects and gifts for residents at Christmas. On Saturday 8 June, twenty junior athletes from Harriers Athletics Club represented North East Essex at the Essex County Schools 88th Track and Field Championships 2019, held at Chelmsford Athletic Centre. Participants were vying for team selection to compete at the prestigious English Schools Championships in July. One of the earliest competitors to take on the challenge was Sean Emeka-Ugwuadu. Hammer throwers, Billy Pram Singh and James Hamblin produced excellent performances over the weekend of 1st & 2nd June. Competing at the South of England U20 and Senior Championships in Bedford on Sunday 2nd, Billy, contested for the first time since an unfortunate knee injury, and following six weeks of focused rehab, produced one of his best national standard performances to claim a silver medal. Colchester Harriers were competing at many events over the last week, Pete Jones got the green vests off to a great start running in the iconic London to Brighton 100km, Jones clocked 13 hours 50 mins over the tough hilly course to finish 53rd out of 800 runners, it was a fine effort by Jones in his first 100km race Experienced distance runner Allen Smalls took the notorious Stour Valley marathon held over the tough terrain of Suffolk in his stride finishing joint third in 3h 38m, with the winner the British 100km Champion who clocked 6h 44m this year over that distance taking first place... read more

On Sunday 2 June, Colchester Harriers Juniors travelled down the A12 to compete their toughest match of the season.  Facing host team Chelmsford as well Basildon and Havering - three of the top clubs in the eastern region - as well as teams from CATS and North Suffolk, points were of the essence.  Provisional results placed the team in a great 4th place finish with 595 points. SWith many athletes unavailable this weekend due to international competition, GCSE exams and injury's, it was a depleted team that traveled to Eton for our 2nd league match of the season. For those that made the trip, there were some amazing performances and an abundance of support and encouragement. We may have come 4th in the match, but we fought to the end for every point. For the women, many were competing in events for the first time, in the sprints Ella Gray took 3rd in the 100m and 4th in the 200m. Barry Frost strode to victory in the Paras 10 held from Abbey Fields and taking in a host of terrains including stream crossings in what is now an established Colchester event. Harriers Alex Sales, Ian Haw and Natasha Rice, were also well to the fore. The Cader Idris Fell race held in Dolgellau in mid Wales is a real test with the summit of the mountain of Idris the half way point of this tough 12 mile event. Three Colchester Harriers competed at the Loughborough International Athletics meeting on Sunday 19 May 2019. The event included national teams from England, Scotland & Wales, as well as teams from GB Juniors, British Universities and a team from the host club. Fresh from her BUCS’ success Philippa Davenall was the first to compete, representing the British Universities team in the hammer.  She continued her season’s good form launching the hammer to her third best ever distance of 58.04m to take a credible 7th place in the match. Adrian Mussett, although 47, continues to inspire younger runners. The Veteran runner won the high quality Grand East Anglian 10km Run in Kings Lynn in a superb time of 32m 46s, yet again leaving the field in his wake. Anita Mussett clocked a good 48m 04s. At the tough Halstead Marathon it was team silver medals for the Green vests, Nate Filer 2h 40m, James Wright 2h 52m,  Chris Manby 3h 11m, with his first ever Essex medal, who took the honours. Harriers international triathlete Melissa Dowell has returned from north west Spain with a silver medal after racing in the ITU World Long Course Triathlon Championships on 4th May in Pontevedra.  The race was set to comprise of a 3k river swim, 120k bike course and 30k run. Unfortunately, due to the cold water and safety aspects the swim course was reduced to 1.5k and the bike course to 108k, with the run remaining at 30k.  Swim Melissa had a good swim, coping with the difficult water current, exiting the water in 28m 53s; first out of the water for all women over 45... read more
