The Club were out in force as the Town celebrated the arrival of a second Park run to help take the pressure off Colchester Castle which is seeing increasing numbers every Saturday morning. With the two runs starting at the same time at different ends of the town it is hoped to level things out more, however the first running at Highwoods saw an impressive 275 runners take part, while the Castle Park numbers only dropped marginally with 375 turning out. Three teenage Harriers took the journey to Sheffield to compete in the England Athletics Age Group Championships held over the weekend of 23rd and 24th February. On Saturday Joy Ogunleye successfully worked her way through three rounds to find herself in the final of the U20 women’s 60m. Once again utilising her lightening start to gain her a good advantage from the gun and showing composure in round two as her semi-final was thwarted by a delayed recall on a false start. The Harriers competed in numerous events during the week starting indoors at Lee Valley where a handful of Harriers competed in an open meeting on Wednesday. Young Thomas Palmer won his 800m race in 2m 00.12. In the next 800m race Danny Millward was also a winner in 2m 09.93s with Tom Cresswell runner up 2m 20.09s and Paul Preston 3rd in 2m 23.71s. In the 1,500m races Ermeas Aferwerki clocked 4m 12.85s in his race. Danny Millward was runner up in his race in 4m 20.47s. The Club's Senior Awards night for 2018 performances saw highly ranked GB international under 20 sprinter Charlie Dobson take the coveted Harriers Athlete of the Year. Dobson had a phenomenal year both indoors and outdoors culminating in him taking the silver medal in the IAAF under 20 World Championships held at Tampere, Finland in July, clocking an amazing 20.57s in the final, missing out on the gold medal by less than 1/10th of a second. Colchester Harriers seniors duly wrapped up the North Essex and South Suffolk Cross Country League with another easy victory at the final fixture at a very spring like Gosfield School. The juniors also were league winners and matched the seniors with five victories from the six races and both squads were runner up in the other match. Ramadam Osman won the race with ease, after it had been restarted when the field all went off course due to a missing marshal early on. Two Colchester Harriers, Paul Spowage and Lucy Mapp, competed in the Anglia Water standard distance Duathlon at Grafham Water on Sunday. Veteran Paul competing in the 55-59 age group for Born2Tri ran the first 10k in 40m 10s heading in to the transition area in 25th place. Paul then sped around the bike section of the race; a two lap course measuring 23.8 miles in 65m 07s. Leaving the transition area for the second time he had dropped to 28th place. On Saturday 2nd February four Colchester Harriers hammer throwers braved freezing conditions to take part in their first competition of 2019 at the Thetford A.C. Winter Throws Series. Conditions were far from ideal but the snow flurries did stop just in time for the competition to begin. Young Wyatt Larkins was first in the throwing order, his first three throws were rather cautious in a slippery circle but by the last half of the competition he had built confidence in his technique and he delivered three great throws. On Saturday 9 February 2019, sisters Megan and Amelie Taylor represented Essex at the Regional Sportshall Athletics final held at Sports Park, UEA, Norwich. Competing as an U15, Megan helped team Essex to a great silver medal competing in the Vertical Jump, Speed Bounce, two lap and four by two lap relay. Her best placing was fifth in the vertical jump (52cm) and overall finished in a creditable 17th place. Younger sister Amelie, competing as an U11 gained valuable points for her team to also gain a team Silver in a close match which saw just ten points between the top two... read more
On a slightly wet and windy Sunday Colchester Harriers again came together as a club and produced a fantastic set of cross country results. Both the senior and junior athletes dominated in their respective leagues, with the senior men finishing first and the senior ladies also finishing first. These results mean Harriers go into the final fixture with the taste of a first league title in eight years.
