Day one of Essex Track and Field Championships on Saturday 11 May The Hammer cage produced the first two gold medals of the 2019 championships, held as usual at Melbourne Park in Chelmsford. U13 Wyatt Larkins enjoyed a very consistent competition with a best throw of 31m claiming him his first Championship title in the 3k event whilst U15 Olivia Simon once again obliterated the field with a huge 9m lead. Hammer thrower, Philippa Davenall, enjoyed her biggest success to date at the British University Championships in Bedford over the weekend of Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th May. BUCS Bedford May 4-6th Following a strong block of training, and positive thinking.  Philippa, representing Nottingham Uni, was able to cope well with qualification for the final, and with her first round throw of 55.17m was comfortably through to the following days final. H The second EYAL meet saw Harriers take what will be their shortest journey of the year - to Ipswich on Sunday 5 May, for another day of scintillating track and field athletics. Provisional results placed the team in a fabulous third place with an amazing total of 619.5 points, placing the green vests ninth in the league. Here’s the marathon story of an ex Colchester Harrier, Tom Cutts, who competed for the club as a teenager in the noughties.  I’m sure some of you will remember Tom, an excellent javelin thrower with a good turn of speed over 400m. Almost 24 hours to Machico by Allen Smalls

Even by his own standards Colchester Harriers Allen Smalls ran an epic race at the Madeira Island ultra trail run over 115km and 4,700m climb of mountainous terrain with the added problem of a midnight start. With a lot of the worlds best ultra runners on the start line it was a top class affair and Smalls stuck solidly to the task, moving up from 472nd position early on to reach Rosairo roughly the end of the first Marathon in 352nd spot. SOUTHERN ATHLETIC LEAGUE MATCH 1 NORWICH

Colchester Harriers headed off to Norwich for their first match of the season on Saturday. The conditions on the day were more suitable for a winter’s cross country league, despite the cold and blustery conditions, the Harriers put up a good fight for a close fought 3rd position, just behind Chelmsford AC and hosts Norwich. There were some terrific individual performances on the day and some really encouraging debuts from our younger athletes, making the move from Junior to senior athletics. Good results for the green vests over the Easter break

Colchester Harriers turned out at numerous events over the Bank Holiday weekend with the green vests successful everywhere they competed. The Sudbury 5 mile race on Good Friday is a very popular event attracting over 500 runners and the Harriers pack were near the front of the race. Jason Gunn led the Harriers home in fourth spot clocking 28m 16s, then came Mark McKeown sixth in 28m 30s, Tom Cresswell ninth in 29m 02s and James Wright 12th in 29m 19s, the final Harrier to go sub 30 minutes. Record Result for Opening Meet

Despite the mercury hovering just over 3 degrees as the coach set off for Peterborough en-route to the first EYAL meet of the year, Sunday 14 April may well be remembered as one of the coldest meets, but also one with potentially the largest opening meet scores for the club.  The junior green vests put in a magnificent display to finish in a fantastic second place with a provisional score of 605.  A great start to the track and field season placing the club in 9th position in the league after just one meet. Mitchell has great run at Manchester

The Manchester Marathon is becoming a top class event and a handful of Colchester Harriers were involved this year with some superb results. Ed Mitchell who has won a handful of good quality races in the last year including an Essex 5 and 10 mile road Championship was in sparkling form at Manchester clocking a personal best 2h 31m 46s to finish 23rd overall. Veteran Paul Preston is also in cracking form and came home in a new personal best 2h 49m 00s, knocking four minutes off his previous standing.
