David Heather, 81 years. Past President and Life Member

David died in Colchester Hospital on Sunday 2nd June 2019,  following a very short illness. For several years he had been resident at Mistley Manor Nursing Home. Mistley, Essex. Margaret and I have visited him along with other  members of our Club. David was a Trustee at Hamilton Lodge, Great Bromley, a home for adults with learning difficulties.

For many years Colchester Joggers/Harriers supported the home and raised monies towards projects and gifts for residents at Christmas. We also had access to their large gardens and lawned areas for events and a location to start races and trail events. The staff were  very supportive and the residents looked forward to seeing us. For many years together with a Salvation Captain we arranged a carol service for our members, staff and residents. David was an inspiration to us all, a friend, road, cross country runner and dedicated a lot of his time to Club members and families. He successfully ran the London Marathon.

Diane his wife of many years was his first love  and they met through their love for horses and when ever possible rode together. After her death life became difficult, the Club along with the local Hash Harriers he found some comfort.

David was an academic, lecturer at Suffolk Police Headquarters,  public speaker on many subjects. He was also a Trustee at ‘Munnings’ Gallery, Dedham. He had a fascination in the development of horse shoes and spent several years researching the subject world wide.

On several occasions I sat down with him and discussed the subject. I found his favourite subject interesting and I became interested in ‘morphic resonance’, suggest you read definition and many things in life may make better sense. David was a good friend of my family whom he supported, he also supported many of our older members and we all have much to thank him for in the development and success of our Club. He will be missed by many older members and all he knew him. A true Gentleman.

His funeral will be held at Weeley Crematorium, 11am on Thursday 20 June 2019. Full details will be published in The County Standard this Friday.
