Gold for Dobson at English Champs!
A sensational weekend of athletic action took place at the EIS in Sheffield as hundreds of youngsters battled it out at the England Indoor Age Group Championships.
Representing Harriers this year in their respective 200m races were Rebecca Jeggo and Charlie Dobson. Unfortunately, Joy Ogunleye who was due to compete in the 60m had to pull out due to a niggling injury.
Fresh from her debut appearance at the British Championships the week before, Jeggo was first up in heat three of the U20 women’s race. Despite a slight hesitant start, she hit the finish line in second place and a sub 25s time. This was enough to comfortably secure her place in the semi just over an hour later, where she finished in third place in a time of 24.96, just outside a place in the final by a tantalising four one hundredths of a second! However, she should feel confident moving into the outdoor season in a months time.
In the men’s race, Dobson confidently sailed through both his heat and semi, in 21.63s and 21.66s, easing down to the line on both occasions after ensuring he was under no threat. After a four hour wait he then displayed sublime running technique in the final, as he attacked the bends seamlessly on his way to a huge personal best and club record of 21.02s, along with the championship title. Finishing metres ahead of the field – which included a Junior European Commonwealth Games semi-finalist – his time was the quickest recorded by a British Junior Indoors for a decade and currently places him third quickest overall on Power of 10 this year. His win brought with it an invitation to represent England at the Welsh International to be held in Cardiff on Sunday 4 March.
