Lyla Belshaw eased herself  through to the final of the U15 girls 1500m at the England Athletics Age group Champs at Bedford on Saturday 27 August, in a race which showed how she has developed her tactics. Competing in the first of two semi finals she settled into the front of a close pack where a steady pace saw her sit on the shoulder of the leader for most of the first half of the  race with  little to choose between anyone. Colchester Harriers’ athletes enjoyed success at two very different events held over the course of another weekend of soaring temperatures. An intrepid group of 4 took on the SVP 50, a gruelling 50 kilometre ultra-marathon trail race following the Stour Valley Path from Sudbury to Manningtree.   In torrid conditions Cameron Humphries completed the course, including 730 metres of climbing, in 5:06:36 to finish in fourth place.  Chris Manby came home in 14th in 5:57:05, whilst Paul Rodgers clocked 9:08:52 and Kieran Callaghan 9:10:25. Colchester Harriers enjoyed another successful day in the sunshine at the Ipswich Ekiden, an annual team relay competition based on a popular Japanese format involving teams of six combining to cover the marathon distance.  Colchester took 9 teams up the A12 to the event, which attracted over 140 teams from across East Anglia, and continued their successful season by coming away with 3 team titles and two second places. Colchester Harriers’ Senior Women’s team took another big step towards securing their first ever Essex County Road Race Grand Prix title with another stunning performance at the Felsted 10K.   On a hot morning in the North Essex countryside Heidi Hogan-Steele was first home for the green vests, returning to something like her best form with a run of 38:34 to secure the individual open silver medal.  Hogan-Steele was well backed up by captain Tracy English, who took V45 gold in a personal best (PB) time of 39:05 and Victoria Primmer who ran 39:48 to claim fifth place overall as... read more

On Sunday 10 July, the young green vests certainly rose to the challenge of performing in front of a home crowd and also the soaring temperatures. They finished the day in their best position this season, a good third place behind stalwarts Norwich and Ipswich with a provisional total of 416 points – this is a significant improvement and testamount to the hard work of both the athletes and the Track and Field Coaching team over the past year. Colchester Harriers were represented at the prestigious English Schools Championships which took place Friday 8th and Saturday 9th July at Sportcity Manchester by three young athletes – all making their junior debuts. This is such an exciting event where so many future stars cut their teeth and find a taste for this brilliant sport. Colchester Harriers’ athletes enjoyed a golden evening at the Pleshey 5 – which this year doubled as the Essex 5 Mile Championships. Harriers’ women’s team again led the way winning the team gold medal with three runners closely packed in the top four positions as Tracy English ran a Personal Best (PB) of 30:58 to claim individual silver, Victoria Primmer clocked 31:05 (PB) to take bronze and Heidi Hogan-Steele just behind in fourth with 31:10. Colchester Harriers enjoyed a successful evening at the Ipswich Twilight 5K with a string of fine performances. Evergreen Adrian Mussett led the way running 15:21, the fastest time in his age group in the UK this year, to claim seventh place overall and just edging out club mate Jordan Middlemist, who ran a personal best (PB) of 15;29 to finish one place behind in eighth.  Max Caulfield improved his own previous best by over a minute to finish twelfth in 15:42, men’s club captain Tom Cresswell clocked 16:22 (PB), and was followed by Colin Ridley who was first M60 in 17:06 and Paul... read more

Sunday 1 May, saw a team of juniors participate at Ipswich in the first of just three EYAL matches this year –and a tightly fought match it was too, with just sixteen points separating third to fifth place the day featured some fantastic performances by our young green vests, many of whom were making their debut appearance. Colchester Harriers athletes came home weighed down with precious metal as they continued their strong start to the road racing season at the Essex County 10 Mile Championships in Witham.
