Ultra men looking good as Smalls close to victory
Colchester Harriers ultra distance men Allen Smalls and Cameron Humphries are in great form. Essex marathon champion Allen Smalls continued his superb year with a runners-up spot over the 100km (62 miles) Stour Valley Way race from Newmarket to Catteswade. In a close run affair Smalls and Ian Hammett of Bedford and County were always only a couple of minutes apart until the last 15 miles where Hammett, who is much younger than 48 year old Smalls, finally got away, Smalls came in tired but happy with his time, over this tough off-road event, of 9 hours 39:25. Hammett clocked 9 hours 32:38 with third placed Kieron Drane of Ely way behind in 10 hours 15:38.
Cameron Humphries knocked up another 100 miles in training this week as he continues his odessy towards his 24 hour track race in September, but although running on tired legs he still managed to win the Colchester Castle Park run in a personal best 17:17. Dan Foster 19:05, Alex Williamson 19:16, David Wright 19:22 and Simon Smith 19:35 were all the top 10.
