Stepping onto a track for the first time this year following a solid block of distance training throughout lockdown, U13 Lyla Belshaw couldn’t have been more delighted with her performance.  At the BFTTA Open at the Jim Peters Stadium, Dagenham on Sunday 23 August she executed a great debut 800m. Competing in the first of two races, Belshaw was placed on the outside of a waterfall start. In the past few weeks, in the run up to the rescheduled British Championships in September Rebecca Jeggo has been laying down a great foundation for her acceptance of her invitation to compete there. At the recent London Inter Club Challenge events Rebecca opened up with her first 100m race of the year with a win in 12.01s into a difficult 2.3mps headwind. Rebecca followed that with third place a high class 200m race which including international and Olympic athletes. Running into a 2.1mps wind she clocked 24.66s. Colchester Harriers’ endurance runners put themselves to the test over the weekend in the Stour Valley Path 50K Ultra marathon.   Run over a challenging 50 kilometre section of the Stour Valley Path from Sudbury to Brantham, the race was run in line with new Covid-19 guidelines involving, among other things, staggered start times for the 200 or so competitors. A Harriers Hammer thrower achieved a substantial personal best at one of the rare official England Athletics pilot competitions being held, whilst other members of the squad have taken on a few of the sparse virtual throwing challenges available during these challenging times. Under 20 thrower Josephine Larkins threw a substantial pb at the EA pilot meeting hosted at Allianz Park on the 11th July. This saw an improvement from the 45.99m, achieved during 2019, to 48.89m. Report by Richard Pickering As you know you were recently asked to complete a questionnaire about the possibility of bringing in another endurance group and about your coaching experience.  The overwhelming response (85%) was that a new group would be a good thing.  Also, that 72% would prefer to have a lead coach who took overall control of their group.  The endurance committee had a meeting to decide what to do, followed by a coaches’ meeting  to see how we could best resource our suggestions. Colchester Harriers confirmed their place amongst the top echelon of the county’s running clubs in the latest virtually staged event - the Essex 6/12 Virtual Relay Competition.    Teams of twelve men and six women from the top running clubs across the county ran a series of legs of 5K and 5 miles either on their own or in small groups and then submitted evidence of their times to the organisers.  Whilst running races in this way is far from ideal, athletes relished to chance to compete in a safe and responsible way and the battle for the top places was extremely... read more
