Harriers’ runners put on another strong showing in the latest nationwide virtual athletics event, the British Masters Virtual 1 Mile Challenge, in the process firmly establishing themselves as a force to be reckoned with on the national veteran road running stage. Colchester Harriers followed up their success in the qualifying round with a fine performance in the final round of England Athletics Virtual Road Relay Competition. The competition, organised by the sport’s governing body, involved thousands of athletes from nearly 150 of the country’s top clubs each running 5 mile legs against the clock. The top 50 clubs then progressed to the final round in which the best four men’s and women’s times from each club were combined, with the final placings being decided on the aggregate times of each club. If we look at the end of 2019 as a starting point, we had some great success in Masters cross country.  In the South of England Masters in Oxford we were second M50 team and more locally in the Essex vets championships Allen Smalls won the V50 race with Colin Ridley finishing first V55 with Colchester Harriers winning overall team gold.  The women taking an excellent bronze medal. 2020 saw the vast majority of its younger T & F members in particular, without the opportunity to be coached as restrictions in regulations and personal decisions meant the number of available coaches dropped significantly.   Sadly, the club also said a final goodbye to Pole Vault Coach Glyn Wyman who lost his battle to Leukaemia early in the Pandemic. Coming up with ever more inventive ways to keep its runners motivated and at peak fitness, Colchester Harriers took on rival Essex club Woodford Green and Essex Ladies (WGEL) in a virtual mob match over the weekend.  With every runner’s performance counting towards the result and an age-graded competition too, every participant had a stake in the result and an incentive to perform.
