Southern Athletics League: Walton

For their latest venture, Colchester Harriers senior team were in action at a sun baked Walton track. To the delight of team managers; Helen Holdsworth and Linda Garnham, they returned home with a close victory over the host club. Thereby ensuring their safety and a possible top five finish for the season.

 

Leading the way in the match with a comprehensive win in the Hammer, along with a club senior and under 20 record of 59.03 metres was James Hamblin. This has seen him rise to number two in England for the under 20’s in 2015. The former record holder Rob Earle was confined to winning the B competition [50.24m]. These roles were reversed in the Shot with A and B wins in for the pairing of 12.41m and 12.06m respectively.

 

In the sprints there were fine performances from Rebecca Jeggo [12.9] and Kelly Sutton [12.6] in the 100 metres to record a double win. With Sutton also triumphing in the 200. With Divi Tuilovoni taking the B string. On the male side Ben Argent recorded a win in the 100m [11.2] and a second place in the 200m. The latter race seeing Connor Oliver win the second string. Oliver also recorded his first sub 50 second 400 metre race with 49.4 secs for a battling 2nd place. Heather Rose and Helen Bloomfield then recorded A and B wins respectively in 58.6 and 62.8 secs. Rose also achieved a B win in the 400 metre hurdles, with Nicola Martell-Smith taking the A race.

 

Other wins were achieved by Catherine Holdsworth in the Shot with 12.12m,  Matt Rose and Rob Smith in the 400 metre hurdles, a feat repeated by Anthony Barraclough and Jordan Rowe in the 3k Steeplechase. Stacey Wheat in the B Steeplechase, which supported a second place in the A race by Ella Neal.

 

For the younger performers in the team Jake Young took second place in the 400 metres with 51.8. Jordon Rowe 1.59.3 for second in the 800m. Rebecca Cooke, double second places in the 800 and 1500 metres. Jordan Fester picked up a multitude of points in the Javelin, Triple Jump and Long Jump. Courtney Bland and Millie Belbin did likewise in the High Jump and Triple Jump, along with Yasmin Othman in the javelin and discus.

 

In the relays the Ladies achieved a first place in the 4×100 metres. With the men’s quartet finishing second, as did both the men and women in the 4×400’s.

 

Once again, the team give their thanks to the large group of club officials who supported the team with their professionalism throughout the afternoon.
