Club Record, and Bronze for Ogunleye’s Harrier’s Debut

A number of Colchester Harriers under 20 track athletes, opened up their indoor season, at the South of England Indoor Athletics Championships, held at Lee Valley over the weekend of 13th & 14 January.

Notable performances were produced, in a highly competitive and hard-fought weekend of high quality athletics.

In her first outing as a Under 20 age group athlete and also her first as a Colchester Harrier, the highly talented Joy Ogunleye won a bronze medal, in the 60m Sprint, setting a new club record for the event. After easing through her heat in 7.69secs, then a hard semi-final in 7.67secs, Joy then fought hard for her third place in a truly exciting finish in the final, with a time of 7.65secs.

The 60m also had good performances from Caitlin O’Reilly, who has overcome niggly injuries and interruptions to training, to come away with a pleasing start to the season with a 7.94sec timing.

The same can be said of Callum McKay, whose 7.19secs 60m time was a good marker to lay down for the start of the year.

Joe Wilkin gained a PB in his first year as a Under 23, running in the Senior Mens 60m, running 7.43secs whilst Toyin Olufemi in her first year as a Harrier ran 8.72secs.

In the 200m, Rebecca Jeggo put in a good performance, reaching the final of the Under 20 women’s 200m, with a best time for the day of 25.39secs.

Caitlin O’Reilly ran another fine race in the 200m, with a time of 26.72secs and Callum McKay’s 200m was another solid performance.

In the Under 20 men’s 400m, Thierry Ajala ran his first race as a Under 20, with a good 53.91sec. time to open the season.
